Sponge cake is preserving Basket and Barrel Sea Sponges helping to rescue and
share nature’s true art. All sponges are sourced from Key West beach ‘wash ups’.
No live sponge is ever taken from the gulf. All proceeds are donated to local
marine environmental groups.
Sponges are our ocean’s natural cleaners. They obtain their food by filtering the
sea. There are over 9000 species of these incredible reef residents. They can live
hundreds of years.
The local preserving process takes about a week to clean and dry. Each sponge will
naturally have small tears, holes and mixed colorations reflecting it’s original
location and journey from the sea. No two sponges are ever a like.
***Founder, Susan ‘J’ Hauck was lucky to be introduced to Marine Biology through
classes taught by Erwin J. Ernst, Marine life conservator of the New York Aquarium.
That began her life long love for all things coastal. She has spent most of her life
living on either the Long Island Sound, the Puget Sound or Key West.
